Ultra—Periféricas: an exhibition reflecting on what it means to be queer in remote, distant or less visible places, will open at vaga, in Ponta Delgada
vaga space in Ponta Delgada, headquarters of Anda&Fala - Associação Cultural, is opening Ultra-Periféricas this Saturday, February 8, at 6 pm, a group show curated by the vaga team and featuring Anita Nemet, Atelineiras, Daniasa M. Curbelo & Ninf.A, Francisco Nuno Rodrigues, Mel Paiva and Vicente Blanco.
Ultra—Periféricas starts from the margins — both geographical and social — taking the Azores as a starting point to reflect on what it means to be queer in remote, distant, or less visible places. The exhibition celebrates the improbable and the banal as tools of resistance to cultural and social norms, proposing a reinterpretation of deviation as an opportunity to imagine alternative ways of living, loving, and creating.
The exhibition brings together new works, commissioned by Anda&Fala, by Atelineiras (São Miguel, Azores), Francisco Nuno Rodrigues (Madeira) and Mel Paiva (São Miguel, Azores), as well as works by Anita Nemet (Ukraine), Daniasa M. Curbelo & Ninf.A (Canary Islands) and Vicente Blanco (Spain). The practices presented defy the limitations imposed by a geography subjugated to the idea of a dominant center, transforming the distance that separates us from it into a space for experimentation and resilience.
The opening of the exhibition takes place this Saturday, February 8, at 6pm, with a set by Venezuelan DJ Caliente Isa, from 7:30pm to 10pm. Entry to the space and participation in the activities is free.
Over the course of three months, until April, along with Ultra-Periféricas, there will be sessions dedicated to reading and sharing (February 26), workshops at Escola vaga (March 7, 8, 9), walks (April 5), commensality (April 12), music and performance (March 22 and 28, April 26). The exhibition can be visited from Thursday to Saturday, from noon to 6pm, until April 26.
Anda&Fala is a non-profit cultural association based on the island of São Miguel and supported by the Government of the Azores, the Portuguese Republic/DgArtes and Ponta Delgada City Council.
