vaga is a space dedicated to the reflection on arts and knowledge, sensitive to the dynamics of São Miguel Island and its diverse communities. As the headquarters of Anda&Fala in Ponta Delgada, vaga offers the city a venue focused on contemporary arts, with a regular and multidisciplinary program that hosts and presents exhibitions, performances, talks, workshops, and artist residencies.
Inspired by the island’s geography and insular condition, vaga embodies the idea of flow, rhythm, and intensity projected for Ponta Delgada. More than an organization, vaga exists as a living entity, acting on multiple scales—from the street to the island, from the archipelago to the world—and expands the possibilities for artistic dialogue and cooperation from São Miguel to a transregional context, where the autonomy and empowerment of local agents are central values.
vaga expands the organization’s presence in the region through ongoing projects that include audience development, complementary artistic education, and year-round artist support. This program aims to strengthen the cultural ecosystem by fostering a collaborative and synergistic environment for artistic creation and sharing.
The programming aims to stimulate artistic creation, research, and production rooted in the Azorean geographic and cultural context, diversifying and enhancing São Miguel’s programming and actions in mediation and education; to professionalize and improve working conditions for cultural agents, promoting a shared economy and local investment that values resources, strengthens creative processes, and broadens the territorial impact of its actions; and to consolidate the institution within the cultural ecosystem, reinforcing its role as a local interlocutor and ambassador of the Azores on the international cultural stage.
The creation of vaga stems from the convergence of Anda&Fala’s ambitions and the response to the cultural needs and aspirations of Ponta Delgada and the archipelago. After ten years of activity, it became clear that a venue would improve long-term projects and programming and provide a platform for a new generation of artists exploring new formats and presences.
vaga’s architectural project was designed with Mezzo Atelier — Joana Garcia Oliveira and Giacomo Mezzadri, with the collaboration of Nuno Simas and Sabrina Sinelli. An empty 400 m² former warehouse, located in a residential area on the outskirts of the historic center of the city, served as the basis for the creation of vaga, consolidating the Association’s permanence in the territory over time.
The division of the space into the programmatic areas (workshop — gallery — house) followed the pre-existing structure, as did the openings in the single-volume facade. The main atrium, an extension of the street with service and store area inserted in a wooden exhibition wall, opens to the gallery — the presentation space, with foyer and two exhibition rooms that can accommodate projects in various disciplines, such as a focus on visual arts, through 4 pivoting doors that leave space to draw various modes of circulation. Laterally, the workshop and warehouse, with direct access to the street, give way to a space dedicated to production and creation, with gathering areas and stations equipped with specialized equipment. The last slice of the volume brings us to the house, the domestic space of vaga.
Color has revealed to play a fundamental role in the project, giving it character and clarity. A grayish-blue tone was chosen to standardize the façade and all its elements, as well as the pre-existing internal volume. It was also with the purpose of standardizing the interior that all the ceiling and structural elements in wood and steel were painted in matt black.
