This introductory workshop explores the fundamentals of hand carving. It introduces the mechanical properties of wood, essential safety considerations, and the basic use of carving tools, while guiding participants through the tactile and material language of the practice. Through direct engagement with the material and hand-carving techniques, participants are invited to design and create their own object — a kitchen utensil of their choice — using Port Orford cedar, an aromatic, fine-grained wood particularly well-suited for experimentation and as a first step in wood carving.
