SJÓSETNIG – SHIP LAUNCH+info
until 11 nov
As a meeting point within a cultural project between Iceland and the Azores, The home movie collective invites us into the parallels between islands in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. The people's undeniable dependency and relation to the surrounding waters, its gifts, and dangers. In this installation, we see a series of old 8mm films recorded by the locals in the heart of the Icelandic rurality. The building of ships, the naming of ships, and the launching of ships.
In "home movies" the gaze of the camera is of a different sort than within, for instance, a documentary-making process, a classic filmmaking scenario, or a directed art project. We can't separate the filmmaker themselves from the images within this realm. So the person preparing and shooting the celluloid is as relevant, if not more, than the objects appearing in the images themselves.
The piece is companied by an original audio work from the art collective Oceanfloor Group.
