The project will be part of Walk&Talk's Circuit of Exhibitions. The circuit maps a group of new individual projects, presented simultaneously in several spaces of Ponta Delgada, by the artists Gonçalo Preto, Maria Trabulo, Andreia Santana, Rita GT, Monica de Miranda, Miguel C. Tavares & José Alberto Gomes and Diana Vidrascu. Curated by Sérgio Fazenda Rodrigues, the circuit explores the idea of "identity" in its relationship with gender, history, landscape, architecture, archeology and other fields of the sciences, to reflect the actions of the collective in the construction of the geographical "place" , at the same time social, cultural and emotional, synthesis and container of fluid and autonomous identities
"Everything was reduced to fragments, to restricted frames and nooks of landscape. Anxious, I sift through that first impression of the whole and I do not find it.”(Raúl Brandão in The Unknown Islands (As Ilhas Desconhecidas).
Inspired by Raul Brandão’s trip to the Azores archipelago in 1924, Miguel C. Tavares and José Alberto Gomes travelled on board “Corvo” cargo ship for a 10 day journey between Mainland Portugal and the Azores, with stops along the islands of São Miguel, Faial, Terceira, Flores and Pico.
With “East Atlantic” they aim to create an audiovisual piece in a film-concert format that translates this imagery into images and sounds, based on the Azorean archipelago and its island condition. In a hybrid space between the documentary and the artistic object, the work also intends to represent the dichotomous insular character, both seductive and attractive, as well as prisoner and claustrophobic.
