Thug Unicorn was born about 6 years ago, when four friends (now three) got together and decided to create a party/facebook page as a satire of machism and homofobia in Rap and Hip-Hop. Hip-hop as genre and culture has been reinventing itself thanks to artists that broke taboos, welcoming an increasingly diverse audience and creating a safe space within that culture both for the feminine and the queer audience.
Thug Unicorn is a satire to all those prejudices, and its ambiguous definition is lost somewhere between the subversive world of the internet and the mediatism of pop culture. Here, everything happens and changes as fast as our Tumblr feed.
Whoever comes to a Thug Unicorn, comes to na anti-dj party, where all music genres, as all people, are welcome. Whoever comes to a Thug Unicorn will listen to r'n'b, hip-hop, trap, cute pop music, or even electro, reggaeton, dancehall or zouk. Whoever comes to a Thug Unicorn will feel like in a sleeover party with friends rolling around in glitter and making playlists on youtube.
Thug Unicorn makes all the sense when we remembre that after all, there are people who dig travelling on the rainbow mounted on badass unicorns, pimped with tons of jewelry just because, free of spirit and hair flipping in the wind. Despite that, deep down, they have chocolate and marshmallow hearts that can and will melt everytime there will be heat, sweat and hands in the hair.
Thug Unicorns’ VJ, s-ara is a digital media artist that spent endless hours shooting at monsters and strolling through mazes. so, it only felt natural for her to evolve through an experimental and explorative process of the visual culture of video games and popular gif files in her animations. she still plays old school computer games.
